Pick the perfect pumpkins
The first thing that comes to many people’s minds when they think of a classic fall season is a bright orange pumpkin sitting on the front porch. Thanks to many modern trends in home decor and landscaping, multi-colored pumpkins are also all the rage—so don’t be afraid to stray from the traditional path! Here are a few great spots in the area that will make your porch the talk of the neighborhood!
While Winston-Salem has many patches around town, some are restricting access or choosing not to open this year due to COVID-19 concerns. However, there are still plenty of places to pick the perfect pumpkin. Check out the pumpkin patch at Tanglewood Stables, which is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. This year, they are limiting guests to 10 in the patch at a time, but they are also providing a tractor ride to all visitors. Talk about the perfect photo op!
If you are looking for another patch to try out, Hawk’s Pumpkin Patch has plenty of photo props available for the perfect Instagrammable moment.
Head to a local apple orchard
The next thing that should be on your fall bucket list is to go picking for apples! After all, it’s the perfect time to make caramel apples…and how fun would it be to pick them yourself? You could even use the fresh apples to make yummy cider! Many orchards are only allowing visitors to select apples that have already been pre-picked, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun while you’re there!
One such orchard has other amenities on the farm that are sure to fill your day with plenty of smiles! Kordick Family Farms, which is about a 40 minute drive from the Winston-Salem area, grows over 170 varieties of heirloom apples. They are allowing guests to bring dogs (as long as they are not in the orchard or pick yard) and have plenty of fall décor available to knock off another item on your bucket list… fall decorating!
Head for a Hike on Pilot Mountain
Finally, one of the best (and cheapest) ways to explore the Winston-Salem area is to get outdoors and enjoy the weather and the views! Make your way to Pilot Mountain, which is about a 30 minute drive north of the Triad, to hike and take in the beautiful leaves changing color!
You can also paddle the Yadkin River on a self-guided trip to see the foliage of Winston-Salem with a view of the water. If you are looking for a little getaway, you can also rent a cabin in the nearby mountains to take in the new sights. Don’t forget to pack a camera to capture the memories of your autumn adventure!
